Canadian women’s team beat USA with surprising 3:0. A year ago American players won with same margin in Cary, North Caroline. Canadian coach Junya Chen is grateful that the Zhang Mo, Commonwealth and PanAm champion is back in the team. “We wanted Mo to play first match against Ariel Hsing. That game opened door to victory. Before the game I have also trusted our double Luo – Liaw, we are preparing them more than a year for international events”. Anqi Luo’s victory against Erica in second game of the match was maybe the biggest surprise. “This morning I lost to Prachi Jha, but in team I got more confidence. Mo won first one and then there were opportunity. I played more aggressive, her rallies are pretty good. In clutch situation I know that I should loop and start attack.
US men’s team successfully defended their title. Three – nil after one hour and 45 minutes. In first game Timothy Wang was better against Pierre-Luc Theriault. Pierre-Luc started well, got significant lead by winning two first sets. Then Timothy changed his game and instead of hard and aggressive strokes started to play with much more rotation. That changed momentum and brought first game to USA. Kunal Chodri faced James Pintea in second game. Four years young Kunal, applied similar tactic. “Pintea is excellent blocker and my only chance was to start with spiny loops and eventually look for chance in third or fourth ball. Most of the time I managed to be patient and implement this strategy. Couple of times I took to risky strokes from awkward positions when ball was almost on the ground and lost third set. ” After winning two first singles it was clear that it would be hard for Canadians to come back and double brought only good fight in last game of the first day.
